Catching
Blocking and Recovery
Instructions
• Catcher in full gear in catching position (home plate optional)
• Coach/partner with balls 30 feet in front of the catcher
• Catcher starts in a pre-set blocking position, with glove and knees on the ground
• Coach/partner tosses the ball into the dirt right in front of the catcher
• Catcher exhales right before the ball hits and tucks chin down as the ball hits the chest protector
• Catcher quickly comes to their feet and points at the ball on the ground to locate it
• Repeat with catcher recovering the ball and practicing footwork to each specific base, (e.g. to first on a dropped third strike, to second or third on a dirt ball)
• Repeat entire sequence, this time with the catcher starting up in the action stance
